Program Description:
Belgium: Env Science and Engin

The “low” countries of Belgium and the Netherlands are among the leaders in the world in water and wastewater treatment as well as in methods to improve local and regional air quality. In this 5-week program, NC State students alongside Texas A&M students, will learn about water and wastewater treatment processes and well as technologies used to protect air quality. The Belgium program will focus on water and air treatment systems for agriculture and will compare U.S. and European practices and environmental policies to protect natural resources. The Belgium Environmental Science and Engineering program is held at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven which is located approximately 30 km east of Brussels in the city of Leuven. In addition to course activities, students will have three- and four-day weekends to explore Europe on their own. Popular sites include Paris, Amsterdam, München (Munich), Köln (Cologne), London, Berlin, and Brussels.

Participants enroll in two 3-hour courses and will receive 6 hours of credit toward graduation. Excursions include, 1) visits to energy production sites to see the technology used to control air emissions, 2) municipal wastewater treatment plants, 3) drinking water production centers, 4) organic waste compost sites, and 5) constructed wetlands for the treatment of wastewater from a pig farm. The courses will be taught at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. K.U. Leuven was established in 1425 and it is now a modern, world-class university with excellent facilities. Field trips and seminar speakers will allow students to learn about European environmental practices and policies and compare them to U.S. practices.
