Program Description:
Spain: Eng in Roman TimesProgram Overview
Based in Oviedo, Spain, this program will identify and explore technological and scientific developments from Spain and the United Kingdom principally, associated with the Roman Empire. Key elements include Roman engineered structures and the societal, cultural context for why they were needed and then constructed. These design and cultural characteristics will be compared to how current designs are done in both Western Europe and the United States. Historical and cultural contexts will illuminate how and why the Romans did what they did and provide how modern societies treat their achievements today.

The course will focus on how the Romans engineered structures that (1) we still use today, or (2) still follow the principles of their design standards. The end goal of the class will be for students to design various structures or predict how well the structures would have worked. Expected types of constructions that participants may design include streets, stormwater harvesting systems, heated baths/ heated floors, or aqueducts. Participants will spend time in the US before and after the three weeks in the host country.
