Program Description:
All DVM students completing a Veterinary International Experience (selective) or Extramural (clinical rotation) abroad must must register their academic experience with the Study Abroad Office (SAO) by submitting the DVM International Programs application (effective for fall 2017 study).
By registering with the SAO, student will have access to the following direct benefits:
  • individualized assistance from the Study Abroad Office in an emergency,
  • pre-departure support from the Study Abroad Office, including orientation videos, handbooks and advice related to health & safety, risk mitigation, and travel documents (passports and visas)
  • low-cost, comprehensive international health insurance*,
  • Study Abroad Office scholarships, and
  • a transcript notation indicating their international experience.

NOTE: Students should submit a DVM International Programs application for the term they are earning academic credit, not necessarily when they are abroad.
  • DVM students going abroad over the summer, but receiving credit during the Spring semester should complete a Spring Short Term DVM International Programs application. If going abroad over the summer, but receiving credit during the Fall semester, then students should submit a Fall Short Term DVM International Programs application.
  • DVM students completing a clinical rotation in blocks 1-14 should submit an application for the Fall Short Term, while students completing a clinical rotation in blocks in blocks 15-24 should submit an application for the Spring Short Term

  • If you are unsure, please contact the Study Abroad Office before beginning the application.
  • If you are trying to register your international academic experience and the deadline has passed, please contact the Study Abroad Office and request we open the application for you. 
  • NOTE: In addition to the study abroad application, DVM students are expected to meet the deadlines and follow all the CVM internal steps outlined on the International Programs "Planning a Trip" webpage.

*Insurance: All students studying on NC State sponsored programs are required to purchase the UNC System Study Abroad Health Insurance policy through HTH Worldwide for the period of study abroad. Please consult our Insurance webpage for information on cost and coverage. Students will be enrolled in coverage based on the dates submitted in the DVM International Programs application questionnaire. Students should review the insurance policy for more details, including billing, cost and covered benefits. Additional insurance coverage for before or after program dates can be arranged by the student after being enrolled in the policy and receiving the insurance card.
