Graduate students are eligible to participate in study abroad programs, and are advised to consult with their advisor and Director of Graduate Programs to determine if they need approval to participate. Graduate Research Abroad and other independent academic experiences abroad are usually arranged between an NC State faculty member and an NC State student, and do not go through any formal institutional review or approval process by the Study Abroad Office.
- Graduate students who will pursue research abroad as part of their degree, and will be enrolled in a course that is specifically associated with that particular international research experience should submit this Graduate Research Abroad application.
- Graduate students who will pursue research abroad as part of their degree, but will be enrolled only in the overarching thesis/dissertation hours, such as BCH 695 - Master's Thesis Research or CH 895 - Doctoral Dissertation Research and would be enrolled in these credit hours whether or not going abroad, should submit their travel itinerary through the International Travel Gateway.
Graduate Research Abroad participants have access to the following benefits:
Students intending to earn NC State credit through research conducted in a country with a current U.S. Department of State Travel Warning
or Center for Disease Control Warning Level 3
must petition the Study Abroad Office to request special approval. Students must meet with staff in the Study Abroad Office to discuss their intended plans and initiate the petition process.
Students should complete the Graduate Research Abroad application based on the term they are earning academic credit, not necessarily when they are abroad.
For example, if a student is going abroad over the summer, but receiving credit for the experience in the fall semester following the summer, they should complete a fall short-term application for our office. If you are unsure, please contact our office before beginning the application. If you wish to register your graduate research abroad experience and the deadline has passed, please contact the Study Abroad Office and request they open the application for you
All students studying on NC State sponsored programs are required to purchase the UNC System Study Abroad Health Insurance policy through HTH Worldwide for the period of study abroad. Information on cost and coverage can be found on the Study Abroad Office webpage on Insurance. Students will be enrolled in coverage based on the dates submitted in the Independent Study Abroad application questionnaire. Students should review the insurance policy for more details, including billing, cost and covered benefits. Additional insurance coverage for before or after program dates can be arranged by the student after being enrolled in the policy and receiving the insurance card.
