Program Description:

Tampere lies on an isthmus between two lakes, on the banks of the Tammerkoski rapids. A city of green parks and clean water, it has little industrial pollution. Once a center of heavy industry, and textile and paper manufacturing, Tampere is now a hub of the IT industries. The largest inland city in Scandinavia, Tampere offers many cultural attractions, theater, film and music festivals as well as museums, an aquarium, dolphinarium and planetarium. Tampere is less than 2 hours from Helsinki by train.

Tampere is a great city for studying! Altogether, there are almost 40000 university students living in Tampere, which makes it one of the biggest university cities in Finland.  Tampere is student-friendly in many ways: there are plenty of free-time activities and sports facilities, and the city bus connections run smoothly day and night. The local student unions, including TAMKO, and the Tampere Chamber of Commercee have initiated a project The Students' Tampere, aiming at bringing students and the business life closer to each other. Over 100 local businesses involved in the project give a student discount to students with a valid student card. More information about the project at

Tampere Polytechnic University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) is an internationally-oriented multi-disciplinary university with 5000 students.  Fields of study at TAMK include Business Administration, Culture, Natural Resources and the Environment, Technology and Transport, and Vocational Teacher Education. Many courses are offered in English.

Services for exchange students include Finnish language classes, student "tutors" (aka buddies) who provide an introduction to the university and city, and teacher "tutors" (like an academic adviser) that assist with questions and guidance related to coursework.

The Transfer Credit Database lists courses that have been previously approved for NC State students at TAMK University. Please note: their applicability to a specific degree program varies by department.  This list is not inclusive. Additional courses can be approved for credit by using the course approval form and process, which is a part of the application for study abroad.  Please refer to the academic information on the host university website for all courses available to study abroad students.

Exchange students apply for accommodations through independent housing companies for furnished rooms in student resident apartments.  More information can be found on TAMK's Accommodation page.

The University reserves the right to alter the program format and/or costs in case of conditions beyond its control.
