FTM 491: Special Topics - Global Textile and Apparel Industry
3 credits, Graded
The course will include a high level of interaction with Ralph Lauren and other apparel and textile companies, including lectures and meetings with product development and production teams, factory visits (sweater, accessories and footwear, dyeing and finishing, fabric manufacturing), retail headquarters, and merchandising and buying teams.


Hong Kong Market Streets
  • Expand understanding of the breadth of the textile, apparel and soft goods industries and understand the interrelationships among key components, particularly merchandising, design, textiles, manufacturing, and international aspects.
  • Appreciate the uniqueness of international components of the apparel and textile industry.
  • Gain an appreciation of international cultural differences in business and related social practices in each of the countries visited
  • Identify and reflect on cross-cultural stereotypes prior to departure and upon return, reassess these perspectives and underlying assumptions for accuracy and examination.
  • Observe and practice the essential elements of professional behavior, dress and interactions with emphasis on professional treatment of tour personnel, speakers, and anyone associated with the tour, including fellow students.
  • Explore the breadth of career options available to merchandising, apparel, and textiles majors.
Accommodations
Students will share a centrally located hotel room in downtown Hong Kong. Hotel breakfast is included.

Excursions & Events
In addition to manufacturing and textile company visits, students will enjoy cultural activities and excursions that might include Victoria Peak, Nan Lian Garden, Star Ferry, and Man Mo Temple. One overnight trip is also planned to visit manufacturing facilities in mainland China.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial aid is generally available to help qualified NC State students meet the expenses of NC State study abroad programs. Students from other institutions should contact their home institution study abroad and financial aid offices for information. For additional funding, NC State students should consider applying for a study abroad scholarship from the Study Abroad Office.
